A Wilmington, Del.-based insurance company launched the first of many retail stores it plans, combining insurance and car care, among other services.

AAA Mid-Atlantic opened Car Care Insurance and Travel Center (CCIT) in Frederick, Md., April 1. It offers AAA members and non-members a place to purchase insurance and memberships, among other services, while their cars are repaired by on-site mechanics.

The recession caused many dealerships and auto repair shops to close, and automobile owners to keep their cars longer, according to the company.

“Our focus is to supply a solution for our members, as well as non-members, around their automotive needs,” Thomas McManus, managing director of insurance sales at AAA Mid-Atlantic, told IFA. “AAA Mid-Atlantic continues to offer auto and home insurance products at their retail stores, as well as through the company’s website and call center.”

He said the new center enables the company to “provide existing and potential insurance customers with the convenience of serving them while they are taking care of their other needs by offering automotive repair and maintenance, travel and financial services, and travel related merchandise all under one roof.”

At the Frederick location, Maryland licensed insurance agents will work next to travel and retail agents, and automotive technicians, according to Ragina C. Averella, manager of public and government affairs at AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The CCIT centers offers auto and home insurance from the AAA Mid-Atlantic Insurance Group, as well as other carriers such as Travelers, Progressive and Kemper, Averella said. The centers provide the same type of insurance that is available at AAA Mid-Atlantic’s retail stores: auto, home, life, umbrella, extended warranties and specialty lines.

Other CCIT centers are scheduled to open in 2011, including one in Fairfax, Va., in late April and one in Towson, Md., in late June, Averella reported. She said additional centers are expected to open this year in Clifton Heights, Pa.; Tom’s River, N.J.; Devon, Pa.; and Annapolis, Md.

AAA Mid-Atlantic serves members in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
